The Mentawai Islands regencies are a chain of about seventy islands and islets approximately 150 kilometres (93 miles) off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. The site is located on Katiet directly on the beachside with 3125 sqm designated area.
The island is surrounded by white sand beaches, with a great ocean waves. The terrain is relatively flat with
some small mounds raising up to 2m. There are a cluster of small accommodation units and restaurant to the South, close to the main beach and arrival area. Set back from the beach, a range of trees exist both native and imported are distributed throughout.
The majority of the buildings are ground level based. Only the master bedroom are set higher. Entry can come through the main building with the option to enter the two bed units and guest house directly. The master bedroom can feel completely private and enjoy panoramic views and perhaps set up extra high to still ensure the main lounge / dining / kitchen area below still has a dramatic sense of space. The remaining units spread across the site with exposed ceiling which create a greater sense of space within.
The pool / yoga pavillion sitting by the edge of the lagoon, catching reflections, will be more of a stand alone building which uses strong geometry in its structure, combined with woven textures and dappled light. There will be openings with views to the sea, while also having shade for comfort. This pool will be the primary focal point of the residence as it centralises activity from each of the units. The pool itself will be large with channels going to different areas, making its usage playful and unique. Platforms, decks, waterfalls and vegetation will be intertwined in its design keeping it very natural. There will not be typical edges to the pool, with its sides being very shallow and gradually deepening as one walks into it.
